The Role of an Architect in Modern Construction: A Comprehensive Overview

Architects play a pivotal role in shaping the built environment. From conceptualising the initial design and planning the project to submitting documents to official bodies and overseeing entire builds, architects wear many different hats. They have a range of responsibilities during modern construction projects, utilising their expertise to achieve successful builds that meet aesthetic, structural, and environmental considerations.

Let’s explore the multifaceted role of architects in modern construction projects.

Understanding the Role of the Architect

Architects have many responsibilities when it comes to modern builds. Although architects aren’t engineers, it’s imperative that they have an understanding of the various structural components that lead to a successful build. After architects submit the initial designs, they will need to work closely with civil and structural engineers to successfully achieve the final blueprint. While some architects might just create drawings, others will oversee the entire project. At JK Designs, we can draw plans or offer our principal agent service whereby we oversee all elements of the project. This includes handling all administrative and financial elements on the client’s behalf.

Responsibilities of architects include the following components

  1. Initial client consult: During the initial consult, architects meet with the client and various stakeholders to determine the scope of the project, the style of the build, and key features and elements that should be included in the design.
  • Drawing up blueprints: After the initial consultation, architects draw up the design. At JK Designs, we also create a 3D video so that clients can get a real feel for the project. After completion, we give clients time to reflect on the project plans and make any necessary adjustments to create their dream build.
  • Creating a project timeline and budget: Once the client is happy, architects can work with relevant stakeholders to create the project budget and estimated scope. Costs include a range of factors including materials and contractor labour costs.
  • Overseeing the project: Architects can also oversee entire builds. This takes the hassle out of projects for clients as architects can deal with tedious counsel submissions, overseeing contractors, and ensuring that everything goes according to plan.
