Architecture – The 4 Benefits of Good Architecture

Four Reasons Why Good Architecture is Important

Since humans first walked the earth, they have required some form of shelter in addition to water and food. Protection from the weather and predators was as essential as sustenance. They first sought a safe sanctuary in caves. They later utilised reeds, branches, clay and other natural materials to erect more functional dwellings. However, mere functionality eventually became insufficient for some occupants. New and more versatile materials and the art of architecture added the missing element – aesthetics, a field constrained only by the designer’s imagination.

Most of us will have visited a city at home or overseas and noted how some buildings seem better suited to the surroundings than others. In practice, many modern structures are beautiful. However, when situated close to a Gothic Cathedral, the beauty of both can be diminished. The implications are clear. The designer’s talent is an intimate mix of art and science that extends beyond functionality and aesthetics. Good architecture must also address cultural, psychosocial and environmental needs. Most authorities offer four sound reasons why quality design work is crucial. Let’s examine these in more detail.

Economics: Technically, the best possible design is one that costs little but helps to generate economic flow. To achieve this will require considering every need of the occupants when developing a plan. The process might begin by establishing the best location for the new building. An inexpensive site will reduce building costs, but it could be a false economy if it’s not readily accessible to the owner’s clients. Good architecture seeks ways to avoid bad outcomes. For example, a basement parking level could simplify life for employees and the company’s clients if the proposed building is in a restricted zone.

Accidents, illness and the need for time off can cost companies dearly, either directly, due to lost productivity or both. Once again, a good designer will seek ways to enhance building safety to minimise the risk of accidents and provide clean air and water to ensure healthy living conditions.

Quality of Life: Humans need more than food, water and fresh air to sustain them. Good architecture accepts that these can only satisfy the body. In contrast, beauty, art and creativity are essential refreshments for the soul. A pleasant view from widows overlooking a green area and some appealing internal décor can do wonders for staff morale and productivity. In parallel, attractive external features that blend with neighbouring structures help create stronger communities.

Create Smooth Internal Flow: Knowing how its occupants operate is essential in establishing a practical design. Each business has a unique “flow” pattern that ensures maximum efficiency when optimised. How employees and clients negotiate a building influences efficiency. For example, good architecture can help hospital patients receive their treatment more promptly and provide a more effective learning environment for students.

A Measure of Progress: Building designs have changed immeasurably since the heydays of the iconic Babylonian, Ancient Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Mayan builders. Though generally less ornate, today’s structures retain their aesthetic appeal but prioritise functionality and sustainability. Furthermore, they are now more reflective of cultural unity than diversity. However they change, they continue to progress.
